Williamston SC is a growing bedroom community! While many of its residents work in nearby Greenville and Anderson, they call Williamston home because of the affordability, safety, and family friendliness. Unlike other small towns that people simply drive through without a second thought, Williamston already has many desirable amenities that make people want to stay, an established downtown area, parks, and historical charm!

HISTORY
Once known as the ‘Saratoga of the South', Williamston SC has Mineral Spring Park to thank for its growth in the Mid-19th century. Williamston’s Mineral Spring Park is the third oldest public park in the country. Mineral Spring was actually the original name for the town before its name change to Williamston in 1852; named after West Allen Williams, who owned a majority of the land that the town sits on today.

In 1851 a railroad track was laid through the town which drastically increased the number of visitors to the town. The town became a major resort, as people traveled from all over in order to drink the water from the mineral spring, which people claimed had healing properties.

The Mammoth Hotel was built near the spring, to provide lodging for tourists. The hotel was the largest building in the state at that time, featuring 150 rooms, bowling alleys, and ballrooms! However, a fire in 1860 destroyed The Mammoth Hotel and many other nearby buildings. Soon after the fire, the American civil war started, so Williamston was never able to rebuild into the resort village it once was.

CITY DEVELOPMENT
In 2015, the town of Williamston began working on a master plan for the town to help guide growth and development in the area over the next 30 years! Along with hiring a company to help develop the Envision plan, the town of Williamston also included hundreds of local community members, who provided suggestions and shared important community issues that were crucial in the development of the city plan. The goal of the Envision Williamston Community Plan is to provide a unified vision for what the town can become in the future. Attracting new business to the downtown area and improving the walkability/connectivity of the community, were a couple of the major topics covered in the plan.

In an effort to help update the look of the downtown, Williamston offered a Façade Improvement Grant Program to eligible candidates. Local businesses and commercial property owners within the town of Williamston could have up to 50% of the expense for exterior improvements!

The town has also run a Main Street Challenge, which is an entrepreneurial start-up competition for the purpose of generating additional retail occupancy in Williamston. Winners of the grant can win up to $10,000 to put towards starting a business in the town.

In 2019, the town completed its Gateway and Beautification Project. The goal of the project is to foster economic development and visitor attraction by improving the attractiveness of the Downtown District with beautiful gateway entries to the historic portion of the town that indicates vitality and community pride of the area.

The Mineral Spring Trail is a popular attraction in the town for running and biking. Plans have been made (but no timeline has been set) to extend the trail to better connect the whole community. The plans mention the possibility of eventually connecting Williamston to the nearby towns of Pelzer and West Pelzer by using these trails and bikeways.

One new development that is currently in the works along The Mineral Springs Trail is the conversion of the old water treatment facility into a brewery, restaurant, or some other similar concept. The development is still waiting to be approved by the town’s planning commission and town council as of August 2021.

The town hasn’t had a grocery store since 2005, But Ingles recently purchased the Town Square Center, which is located in the middle of downtown Williamston. Other shops and restaurants are expected to fill in the remaining slots in the shopping center in the wake of Ingles moving in.

LOCAL RESTAURANTS
Thee Smokin’ Pig is a must-visit when you're in Williamston! They have 4 different locations scattered throughout the westside of the Upstate, each of which has its own unique look and feel! They try to make “Simply the Best BBQ” every day when they open their doors. They have some of the best brisket that you can get in the Upstate!

Across the Street from Mineral Springs Park, Miss B Hotdogs is serving up much more than just hotdogs. This little shop packs a punch, along with hotdogs and hamburgers you will find different southern soul food offered throughout the week!

REAL ESTATE
One of the huge draws to moving to Williamston is the historical charm of the town. There is a nice blend of older homes near downtown with newer homes in neighborhoods spread throughout the town. A subdivision being built near downtown is blending new construction with the town’s historic character. The subdivision will consist of half ranch-style homes ideal for older residents, and half family-style homes which are great for those with young children.
