MIDDLE TYGER AREA
You can’t talk about Duncan without also mentioning Lyman and Wellford. These three towns, along with Startex make up the Middle Tyger Area!
Duncan has the largest business district. Over the last couple of decades, many businesses have set up shop along Highway 290 because of its proximity to I-85. A large part of Duncan’s economic and population growth is thanks to these businesses bringing new jobs to the area.
Out of the three towns, Lyman has the only real, traditional downtown. They have a Town Hall, event center, outdoor amphitheater, and a couple of parks!
The majority of Wellford runs along Highway 29, a popular roadway that connects Greenville to the West and Spartanburg to the East.
Over the last 30 years, the Middle Tyger Area has seen the biggest population density increase in all of Spartanburg County!
Like many other cities in the Upstate, Duncan SC and the other Middle Tyger Area cities have a history closely connected with mills; Jackson Mills, Startex Mills, and Springs Mills provided a large portion of the area's employment and was a large contributor to the population increase in the area during the mid-1920s.
Historically, Startex was the most dependent on its mill, which was the major employer, the owner of the houses, etc., and thus was affected the most by the mills closing in the area.
Duncan was fortunate to have a rail line laid through the town in 1873, which enabled it to take a lead in commercial development over the surrounding towns.
As mentioned above, the majority of businesses in the Duncan area are found along Highway 290. Many of these businesses are manufacturing companies that supply automotive parts, chemicals, electronics, and machinery to other businesses in the area and across the country!
A lot of these manufacturers are international companies and have their North America HeadQuarters in Duncan SC. A few of the companies that are headquartered in the Duncan area include AFL: a telecommunication company, Stäubli: a mechatronics solutions provider, and Dräxlmaier: a car interior manufacturer. While there are many blue-collar jobs in manufacturing, transportation, and other related fields in the area, there is also an abundance of white-collar jobs available as well that help runs these businesses.

Duncan, South Carolina is a great place to raise a family! Duncan is fully invested in its community; they built and operate two parks (Stone Ledge & Shipwreck Cove) to provide fun activities for its young residents.
Stone Ledge Park was built and is operated by the Town of Duncan. The park has a high-quality playground area, picnic shelters, a fitness trail, and restrooms. Adjacent to Stone Ledge Park you’ll find Shipwreck Cove Water Park. The water park offers pirate-themed fun for the whole family; amenities include a lazy river, water slides, and kiddie pool play area!
Tyger River Park is South Carolina’s premier baseball and softball tournament facility! Aside from the 13 ball fields on the premises, the park also boasts a 1.25-mile walking trail, 18 hole disc golf course, clubhouse, outdoor fitness equipment, picnic shelters, playgrounds, and a splash pad!
An important thing to consider before moving to an area with kids is the area’s school district. It just so happens that the school system serving the Middle Tyger Area (District 5) is one of the best in South Carolina! District 5 in Spartanburg County has over 9,000 students from PK to 12th Grade. The low student-to-teacher ratio (14 to 1) allows teachers the opportunity to focus on each student more, thus resulting in a better overall educational experience. Outside of classroom education, District 5 also has great extracurricular programs. The District Five Fine Arts Center allows students to pursue their musical and dramatic interests. James F. Byrnes High School has a great athletics program; across all sports, they have won 42 state championships!
North of I-85 you will find many of the original homes that were built for the mill workers still standing today, some of which have been fully renovated, while others have not been upgraded at all since their original construction. However, due to the surplus of businesses that have moved to the area over the last few decades, many new developments have popped up all over the Middle Tyger Area. Many of the newest subdivisions can be found in the South Duncan and Reidville area.
