Seneca Real Estate
Seneca SC, The Land Beside The Water, is the largest city in Oconee County, South Carolina’s most northwestern county is located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Seneca, like so many other towns in the upstate, developed around the railroad and later the textile industry, but has more recently become a resort town and a go to for many retirees.
History
Seneca was chartered in 1873 and became incorporated on March 14, 1874, as Seneca City, a name derived from Esseneca, a nearby by Cherokee village, which was located on the banks of the nearby Seneca River. Sometime between 1906-1908, under a new charter granted by the Secretary of State, the "City" was dropped from the name, and it became the present-day Seneca, South Carolina. Thanks to the construction of three major dams, Seneca became a lake resort area. Lake Hartwell (1963), Lake Keowee (1971), and Lake Jocassee (1974) now support public utilities, lake recreation, lakefront residency, and water supply to the city. Seneca's downtown Historic District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The American Industrial Architecture of many of the buildings has been preserved to add to the warm, friendly atmosphere and charm of this rural mountain, micropolitan city. In 2023, Seneca will celebrate its Sesquicentennial throughout the entire year.
Local Business
The Ram Cat Alley is the heart of Seneca! 18 of the buildings that make up the alley were built between 1887-1930 and in 2000 the area was added to the National Register of Historic Places. Downtown Seneca is filled with the charm of a small town while providing plenty of choices for dining, shopping and recreation. Locally owned independent boutiques and restaurants fill the area with diverse choices to suit anyone's taste.
